My experiences working with - Architects(Building Services), Site Engineers (Construction), Oil&Gas Engineers
Young Architects are pretty good with computers, they are very familiar with AutoCAD, Microstation and liaise with IT relating to their discipline, but are reluntant to get involved or take Document Control seriously.
The older generation are more likely to use Microstation and prefer to do handrawn sketches then passing them onto their CAD Staff, with companies that use CAD Staff, the Document Controller(s) usually liaise alot more with the CAD Manager instead of the Project Manager.
Most Site Engineers treat Document Control as Secretaries, Administrators, and Cad Operators, at times their expect the Document Controller who holds computer literacy to develop and manipulate a Inhouse Database paying between £20k - £25k to avoid investing money in a proper databse programmer / developer.
Oil&Gas Engineers use AutoCAD, SmartPlant, Visio also something called PDMS. The younger engineers are pretty good with computers and more likely to adapt to the importance of Document Control, whereas the older generation prefer to instruct their draftsmen (CAD Staff) and avoid Document Control as much as they can.
Is there a way to convince them that they need a good Document Control team to increase their clientele? Yes, some ideas will be published on a site called - www.dccqa.com
